Enhancing Spatial Awareness: The Use of Hand Gestures in Navigational Tasks

Abstract

In this study, we explore the role of hand gestures in wayfinding and route memory enhancement during navigation app usage. We conducted experiments with ten participants and recorded their hand gestures as they navigated to an unfamiliar destination. We categorized the gestures into three types: finger pointing, hand horizontal movement, and palm flexion. Participants’ feedback suggested that these gestures played a significant role in improving their spatial awareness and memory recall. This paper sheds light on the potential benefits of incorporating hand gestures into navigation apps for better route memorization.
